CONSEQUENCE OR
PUNISHMENT?
By: Zahro Laila Nur
Teachers would find such
a various obstacle sometimes in managing student’s behavior. Some of the
students obey the rules (what teacher and students have agreed at the
beginning) while another students do not. However, students who break the
rules, should be given consequences. Nevertheless, teacher sometimes is
reversed between giving them consequence or punishment. Consequence is a result
of something that a person does. A consequence itself is divided into two,
natural consequence and logical consequence. In the other hand, punishment is
given to cause a suffering. It is not related to the problem. It does not teach
the students or children what teacher or parent (punishment’s giver) want them
to learn. It is characterized by criticism, disapproval and domination. Letting
students experience natural and logical consequences of their actions is one
way to teach a responsibility.
